Courtyard School

Project type

Institution

Date

2019

Location

Gujarat

Set within an agrarian village, this school is envisioned as more than just a place of learning — it is a landscape of play, growth, and quiet grounding. Designed for children from farming families, the school integrates vegetable gardens and playful courtyards that allow learning to spill outdoors, into the soil, the sun, and the everyday rhythms of village life.

As rural aspirations shift and families slowly step away from agriculture, the design responds with care — not to resist change, but to preserve values. Through hands-on engagement with land, food, and plants, children are offered a gentle continuity with their roots. The courtyards become spaces of both freedom and familiarity, where growing a sapling can be as much a lesson as reading a book.

Constructed using local materials and open layouts, the architecture fosters a sense of belonging without confinement. It allows the school to be a bridge — between tradition and transition, between memory and modernity. In doing so, it hopes to raise not just students, but conscious individuals — aware of where they come from, even as they look ahead.
